Steven N. Norvich "Macro Lens and Depth of field"

As we are talking macro, some "glittering generalities":

  1. Closer is generally better but the animals "zone of comfort" can rarely be exceeded
  2. For the same magnification, depth of field is the same across all lens focal lengths
  3. As magnification increases, higher synch speed becomes desirable for those cameras which have that as a variable (hand shake at 2:1 is not trivial) and one often wishes for 1/250th
  4. As magnification increases, autofocus becomes less useful
  5. Maximum depth of field is not always desirable (for SLR cameras)
  6. As magnification increases, f-stop becomes a function of the selected f-stop but not equal to it necessarily
  7. As relative f-stop (see above) increases, strobe power to light it is required; sometimes this is beyond the strobes capabilities resulting in underexposure.
